Scope and Content Edinburgh Castle from the Grassmarket Edinburgh Castle sits high on the Castle Rock above the Grassmarket. To the right is the semicircular structure of the Half-Moon Battery, built in the 1570s. To the left, the Great Hall and Palace, built in the 15th and 17th centuries. As its name implies, the Grassmarket was originally the site of one of the main Edinburgh markets. The charter was granted in 1477 and weekly sales took place till 1911. This would have been a busy place with the traders' stalls and entertainments. The Grassmarket was also a more sombre place: the site of the public gallows till 1784. Many hundreds of common criminals died here, but it is best known for the religious executions of Covenanters between 1661-88. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
