Scope and Content Concert and lecture room, Gladstone's Land, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh Gladstone's Land was built c.1620, incorporating a 16th-century building, for Thomas Gledstanes, merchant and burgess of the city. It is a fine example of a tenement or 'land' with many features characteristic of Scottish architecture of the period. The arched recess and two doorways are relics of the balconied front wall of the 16th-century house. The oak-beamed ceiling is painted with fruit, flowers and birds. Originally the upper halves of the walls would have been painted like the ceiling beams. In the 17th century in a wealthy merchant's house, the lower halves of the walls of a room were covered with loose hangings, probably of tapestry or linen. The upper halves were painted in bright colours with fruit, flowers, birds and arabesques. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
