The council kept ownership of only the north block which became the City Chambers after the old tolbooth was demolished in 1810. The picture over the fireplace in the ante-chamber on the first floor represents Edinburgh Castle and dates to 1886. The ante-chamber was modified in 1859 when one wall was removed so that it opened directly onto the Old Council Chamber. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
