Description Riverside Houses, Furnace

Date 18/9/1934 to 18/9/1934

Catalogue Number DP 448556

Scope and Content A view over an unfenced pasture with sheep and chickens, towards roadside cottages with walled gardens and trees. Wooded hills rise in the background. Furnace is a village on the Leacann Water and was originally called Inverleacann. The name changed with the arrival of the iron smelting industry in the 18th century. Though iron was not mined in the area, an abundance of oak trees made Inverleacann an ideal location for smelting. The industry ground to a halt in the mid 19th century.
