Holidaymakers are seen strolling or relaxing on the esplanade. The statue was erected on the centenary of the death of Robert Burns in 1896. It represents his former lover Mary Campbell, who died in 1786 and was immortalised by him in the poem 'Highland Mary'. Mary is believed to have been born in Dunoon.
