Scope and Content Tain Mercat Cross, High Street, Tain, Highland Tain, a medieval place of pilgrimage, became a royal burgh by 1567. It expanded from the late 18th century onwards during which time the layout of its streets was rationalised. The base of the Mercat Cross probably dates from the 16th century. The shaft and head date from 1895 and are by Andrew Maitland and Sons. A plaque records that this work was undertaken for James Vass, Provost of Tain from 1876 to 1892.
