Scope and Content There are around 350 species of parrots in warm regions across the world. While their colour, size and habitats change, they all share certain characteristics. Parrots usually hold themselves upright, they have distinctive hooked beaks and feet with two forwards and two backwards toes. Most parrots nest in cavities in trees or cliffs, primarily eating nuts and seeds. They are usually social animals and highly intelligent. Some species can be taught to talk, many excel at problem solving and some even use simple tools. Their intelligence and ability to mimic human speech have made them popular pets throughout history. Today, many of the rarer species are under threat from smugglers who capture, transport and sell them. Another reason for their decreasing numbers is loss of habitat to logging and changes in climate.
