Scope and Content Drawing of Golf Hotel, 4 High Street, Crail, Fife Crail was created a royal burgh in 1310, with a royal castle just to the east of the burgh. Fishing was the main industry in the town throughout its history, but this declined during the 19th century, and the town now relies on tourism. This drawing shows the west (left) and north (right) façades of the Golf Hotel. Built in the early 18th century, the north façade is slightly splayed at the north-west corner where the second floor overhangs the street on a series of corbels. The hotel is three-storeyed with twin-windowed attic rooms in the crowstepped chimney-gable on the west façade and the chimney-gable in the middle of the north façade. The hotel is harled and whitewashed with black painted window and door surrounds. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
