Scope and Content High Street, Crail, Fife, looking east High Street, a broad medieval thoroughfare that runs parallel to the shore, is one of Crail's oldest streets, and may in the past have formed, along with Marketgate which it joins to the east, one large market stance. The Scottish photographer, Erskine Beveridge, photographed High Street on a visit to Crail c.1885. The street is rough and unsurfaced, and forms a long rectangle which gently slopes to the south (right). At the junction with Marketgate (centre), the early 18th-century, three-storeyed Golf Hotel, with its large crowstepped chimney-gable and corbelled out north-west corner, breaks the line of buildings on the south side. Crail's fishing industry was always important, but it gradually declined in the 19th century. In 1886 the railway was extended to Crail from Anstruther, and Victorian holidaymakers soon 'discovered' the town. Hotel accommodation, and the letting of houses or rooms to holidaymakers began to be the keystone of the town's economy. Crail became popular with artists, and for the new fashion of sea bathing.
