Scope and Content Detail of manual chain drive on sliding door mechanism of flying-boat hangar at former seaplane base, Stannergate, Dundee, Tayside A seaplane base consisting of two hangars and a slipway was established near Dundee's harbour by the Royal Navy Air Service in 1914. It is one of several east coast bases set up for carrying out reconnaissance and anti-submarine operations in World War I. An F-type hangar was erected c.1918, along with a second slipway. Composed of a metal structural frame clad with corrugated asbestos, its east wall had 15.55m-wide wheeled doors which could be opened manually via this crank-and-chain drive mechanism. The base closed between 1919 and 1940, when it was reopened for service in World War II. After the war, the hangar was used by a food packaging company and as an engineering workshop. It was demolished in 1986. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
