Scope and Content East face of 'The Bowden Skull' gravestone, Bowden Church, Scottish Borders Several headstones within the churchyard display a very high quality of craftsmanship and evidently Bowden parish had access to a skilled mason in the first half of the 18th century. The finely carved wings and hair of the cherub form the stone's pediment. Beneath, the scroll reads 'Blessed are the dead/which die in the Lord'. Carved in bold relief, the gruesome winged skull symbolises the swiftness of death's approach. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
