Scope and Content Fortrose Free Church (now Parish Church), High Street, Fortrose, Highland Fortrose began as a settlement belonging to the canons of Fortrose Cathedral. It became a royal burgh in 1590, but in 1691 was said to be still a 'little village'. By the later 19th century, the town was an established holiday resort. Fortrose Free Church was built in 1895-8 by John Robertson. The original interior has been refurbished. The Free Church of Scotland was created as a result of the Great Disruption of 1843 when nearly a third of the Church of Scotland's ministers left to form a separate church.
