Scope and Content View of scale-and-platt staircase inside Abbot's House, 21 Maygate, Dunfermline, Fife Dunfermline Abbey was founded by David I in 1128 and completed in its original form in 1250. There were a number of other buildings associated with the abbey including the frater hall, gatehouse, royal guest house or palace and the abbot's house. Built c.1450 as a residence for Abbot Richard de Bothwell this house was reconstructed in the 16th century as the home of Robert Pitcairn, the abbey's commendator (a non-monastic royal appointee granted a religious house for services to the Crown). This is a scale-and-platt stair within the building. Above is an arch with decorative mouldings while the floor below the stair is patterned with coloured tiles. In 1992-5 the whole building was restored as a heritage centre with a café and shop. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
