Scope and Content Drawing showing floor plans of Frater Hall (Refectory), Dunfermline Abbey, Dunfermline, Fife Dunfermline Abbey was founded by David I in 1128 and completed in its original form in 1250. Numerous additions and alterations followed in the 14th and 15th centuries. Abandoned after the Reformation (1560), the abbey was ransacked for building stone. There were a number of other buildings associated with the abbey church, including the frater hall, gatehouse and royal guest house or palace. This photograph shows plans for the upper floors in the frater hall. The frater hall contained the monks' refectory or dining hall (top plan). This had an elaborate traceried window in the west wall (left), and a pulpit set into the south wall. There were a small number of apartments above the refectory (bottom plan).
