Scope and Content Souterrain at Laid, Sutherland, Highland Laid Souterrain once led from a hut circle that has been destroyed by roadworks. It is fairly typical of souterrains in the northern Highlands and though now flooded it would have originally been a perfectly dry storage cellar. Twelve stone steps lead down to the souterrain which has been lined with drystone walls. These are built with larger boulders at the bottom and the roof was lintelled by large slabs. The floor is plain earth. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
