Scope and Content View of Frater Hall (Refectory) and Gatehouse, Dunfermline Abbey, Dunfermline, Fife Dunfermline Abbey was founded by David I in 1128 and completed in its original form in 1250. Numerous additions and alterations followed in the 14th and 15th centuries. Abandoned after the Reformation (1560), the abbey was ransacked for building stone. There were a number of other buildings associated with the abbey church, including the frater hall, gatehouse and royal guest house or palace. This photograph shows the outer wall of the frater hall (right) and the gatehouse (left). The frater hall contained the refectory in the upper storey. Its outer wall was strengthened with projecting buttresses. All visitors passed through the gatehouse in the surrounding high wall, which served both as a means of seclusion and defence.
