Scope and Content Interior view of south-east processional doorway in nave of New Abbey Parish Church, Dunfermline Abbey, Dunfermline, Fife Dunfermline Abbey was founded by David I in 1128 and completed in its original form in 1250. Numerous additions and alterations followed in the 14th and 15th centuries. Abandoned after the Reformation (1560), the abbey was ransacked for building stone. This shows the south-east processional doorway in the nave after its discovery in 1903. This doorway was used by the monks going to and from the cloister. It was possibly blocked when a burial vault was added, and rediscovered when this was demolished. Some of the chevron carving can be seen on the round-headed arch of the doorway. The exterior of the doorway is unusually well-preserved because it has been covered by a burial vault from c.1620 until 1905. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
