Scope and Content View of west doorway of New Abbey Parish Church, Dunfermline Abbey, Dunfermline, Fife Dunfermline Abbey was founded by David I in 1128 and completed in its original form in 1250. Numerous additions and alterations followed in the 14th and 15th centuries. Abandoned after the Reformation (1560), the abbey was ransacked for building stone. This shows the west doorway in the nave of the medieval abbey church. This was the grand processional entrance used by the monks. The doorway is set into a small porch projecting from the main body of the nave and is flanked by two tall towers. Reached by a flight of late 19th-century steps, the doorway itself is surrounded by five alternate round and octagonal shafts, surmounted by scalloped capitals and decorated round-headed arches.
