Scope and Content Smithy, Mains of Applecross Farm, Applecross, Highland Mains of Applecross Farm is a late 18th- to mid-19th-century steading with three notable vernacular barns incorporating wattle and heather thatch and showing strong Hebridean influences in their walling. The steading was formerly called Borrodale and is situated close to the mid-18th-century Applecross House, built for the Mackenzies of Applecross. This single-storeyed, seven-bayed range formerly contained the smithy, but is now a row of cottages, probably for farm workers. The building has been substantially altered including a later rendered extension on the left. The name of this remote village is not connected with fruit but is derived from the Gaelic for 'mouth' (craos) and 'stream' (allt). The Applecross peninsula opposite the Isle of Raasay was accessible only by sea or the steep Bealach na Ba (pass of the cows) until 1976 when the coastal road north to Torridon was built.
