Scope and Content 1903 picture of kelp-burning at Kenavara on Tiree, Argyll This is a picture of kelp (or seawead) burning on the island of Tiree using a traditional technique, unchanged since the 18th century. The calcined ashes were once an important source of alkali for many processes, including soap-making. Tiree, Ceann A' Mhara / / / Kelp Kilns /<br />NMRS Other Kelp-burning flourished in the 18th and early 19th centuries and employed some of the people displaced by the Highland Clearances. After the Napoleonic Wars, the industry was all but destroyed by competition from cheaper Spanish alkali. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
