Scope and Content Entrance to 'The Pends', St Andrews Cathedral Abbey Walls, St Andrews, Fife The Abbey Walls were probably first built in the 14th century to mark the boundary of the Augustinian cathedral-priory's property. However, apart from the gatehouse known as 'The Pends', the surviving walls were built in the early 16th century. The Pends, a vaulted entrance passage with a first-floor porter's lodge, was the main gatehouse of the Augustinian Priory from the 14th century. It lacked military features like draw-bars and portcullises and so was probably not intended for defence. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
