Scope and Content Numbers 1,2 and 3 Portland Place, Inverness, Highland Inverness expanded rapidly in the 19th century following construction of the Caledonian Canal (begun in 1804) and connection to the rail network (1855). Its main industries at that period were ship-building, iron founding and saw-milling. Numbers 1, 2 and 3 Portland Place were built in 1828 as a trio of terraced single-storeyed houses, each with a basement and a Roman Doric portico. The roof of Number 3 (right) was raised at a later date. Roman Doric is one of the mathematically defined architectural styles or Orders used by the Ancient Greeks and Romans during the Classical period and rediscovered by architects during the Renaissance.
