Scope and Content Columba Hotel, Ness Walk, Inverness, Highlands Inverness expanded rapidly in the 19th century following construction of the Caledonian Canal (begun in 1804) and connection to the rail network (1855). Its main industries at that period were ship-building, iron founding and saw-milling. The Columba Hotel was built in Scots Baronial style in 1881 by Alexander Ross, as was the tenement to its right. The hotel was extended to the left in a slightly different style in 1938. Historical styles like Scots Baronial, inspired by pre-18th-century architectural traditions, became popular in the 19th century because they reflected national, rather than Classical, architectural traditions.
