Scope and Content Plan of St Andrews Cathedral Church and Cloister, St Andrews, Fife St Andrew's Cathedral Church and Augustinian priory were begun by Bishop Arnold and King Malcolm IV in 1160 or 1161 and, being constructed on a scale unrivalled anywhere in Britain except at Norwich, took at least half a century to complete. The west end was rebuilt with the loss of two bays in the 1270s after a tempest. A post-medieval house partially covers the cloister and the frater which was the canon's dining-hall. A new chapter house was built for the canons in 1313-21. Disasters suffered by St Andrews Cathedral include: 1270s - a storm demolishing its west end; 1304 - Edward I stripping the lead for his war-effort; around the mid 14th century - a serious fire; and in 1409 - a storm tumbling the south transept's gable.
