Scope and Content Interior of granary, Shinness Steading, Highland Shinness Steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate which, by 1873, comprised almost 1.3m acres, more than 90% of the county. Shinness was originally a sheep farm, but between 1872 and 1877, the land was drained to create four new arable farms and in 1882 new buildings were erected at Shinness itself. This is the interior of the granary from the east. The walls are plastered, the wooden floor has two trap doors down into the cart lodges below. The granary was used to store threshed grain prior to it being sold or used on the farm. A second scheme of land reclamation was begun in 1877 near Kinbrace station in the parish of Kildonan. Both this one and the Shinness project proved extremely expensive, that at Shinness costing £50 per acre for a return of an annual rent of £1. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
