Scope and Content Shinness Steading, Highland Shinness Steading was built on the huge Sutherland estate which, by 1873, comprised almost 1.3m acres, more than 90% of the county. Shinness was originally a sheep farm, but between 1872 and 1877, the land was drained to create four new arable farms and in 1882 new buildings were erected at Shinness itself. This shows the steading from the south-west. From left to right are the tool store (now a hen house), access passage, stable and hay loft and two-bayed covered cattle court. There are a pig house and hen house attached to the front of the stable. According to Andrew Hall's 'Report on sheep farms' of 1846, Shinness was running a 19-year lease to a D Gilchrist who managed 4,400 sheep at 2/9d per head. The farm is now known as called West Shinness. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
