Scope and Content A cropmark of a ring ditch is visible, at bottom R, at the edge of the concrete turning or dispersal circles of the RAF Brackla airfield constructed during WW2. Excavation across the ring ditch in 1990 produced a yellow glass bangle bead and a re-used sherd of 2nd century AD Samian ware. To the left (W) of this are two other ring ditch features but of a different form to the first and a further possible circular feature may lie to the NE at circa NH 85674 51589. Six enclosures are recorded on HC HER, including four by JS Bone during this flight, and it is not entirely clear whether there has been some duplication in numbering here. The prominent ring ditch has been recorded by aerial photography since 1984 and is protected as a scheduled monument. However the adjoining concrete dispersal stances have now been removed and as the ditch was only 300mm deep when excavated, it is feared it might have been seriously damaged in the course of this work and subsequent ploughing. It should also be noted that a medieval homestead motte stood in this area until the early 18th century and recorded as 'Old Cawdor' on an estate map, lying in an area centred at NH 858 512. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
