Scope and Content Kilwuddie Weaving Factory, Holm Street, Strathaven, South Lanarkshire This factory is believed to have been built as a silk mill in about 1860. In 1913 it was taken over by J Lawson & Co, formerly of Bridgeton, Glasgow, who moved their looms there. The firm specialised in weaving tie material, scarves and tartans. This shows part of the loom shop, with Anderston Foundry looms, of which there were 27 in all. These are driven from overhead lineshafts. The shop is of the north-lit type, with the roof supported on cast iron columns, of which two can be seen here. This factory closed in the 1970s, and the weaving sheds are now occupied by a business centre, one of whose tenants is an electronics firm. It was one of the last traditional power-loom weaving factories in the west of Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
