Scope and Content Craigneuk Steel Works, Netherton, Lanarkshire This was the first steel works in Scotland to make alloy steels for domestic use. It made these steels in an electric arc furnace, and produced both bars and castings. This view shows a large Massey steam hammer in the forge. Hammers of this type were based on James Nasmyth's original invention, with the hammer head sliding in guides, as seen here. Clyde Alloy Ltd was a Colville subsidiary set up in 1936 to make stainless and other alloy steels. The bar mill at Craigneuk closed in 1978, though the foundry continued to operate for some years longer. The works has now been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
