Scope and Content South end of cattle courts and straw barn, Crackaig Farm, Highland, from east Crackaig Farm, on the east coast of Sutherland, is on the estates of the Dukes of Sutherland. Beginning in the 1790s, the Sutherlands implemented a sustained programme of agricultural improvement which largely replaced the old system of subsistence farming and the way of life associated with it. This shows the cattle courts and straw barn which form part of the steading, originally built in 1829. The metal roof of the cattle court is made of corrugated iron, a popular roofing material in the north of Scotland since the mid-19th century. Slated roofs like that on the building beyond were also popular. Alterations to the cattle sheds at Crackaig were carried out between 1871 and 1873 at a cost of £188. In 1888 approval was sought for renovations at the south end of the cattle sheds which would include a new roof made entirely of iron. Less durable than slate, corrugated iron needed to be replaced more often. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
