Scope and Content West end of courtyard, Crackaig Farm, Highland, from east Crackaig Farm, on the east coast of Sutherland, is part of the estates of the Dukes of Sutherland. Land on this coastal strip was the first to benefit from a programme of agricultural investment begun in the 1790s following the marriage of Elizabeth, Countess of Sutherland, to the wealthy Lord Stafford in 1785. This shows the courtyard at Crackaig with a design typical of that begun in the era of improvement. The settlements which had served the previous system of subsistence farming were replaced with properly planned stone houses and farm buildings designed to meet the needs of more industrialised agriculture. George Granville Leveson-Gower, 2nd Marquess of Stafford, became the first Duke of Sutherland. He owned large estates in Staffordshire and Shropshire where industrialisation was already well under way. He would have expected a return on the money he had invested in the form of greatly increased rents. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
