Scope and Content This close view focuses on the major buildings on the west bank of the River Ness. St. Andrew's Cathedral is at the bottom of the picture. Above that is Eden Court Theatre and above that is the RNI. The Infirmary Bridge is at the centre. The Northern Meeting Park established in 1864 as the world's oldest highland games stadium, is to the right of the Cathedral. Ness Bank Church is on the east side at bottom left. St. Andrew's Cathedral was built in1866-69. Eden Court Theatre was opened in 1976 and was completely refurbished between 2005 and 2007. The RNI was opened in 1804 and functioned as the main hospital for Inverness till Raigmore Hospital was built. Gradually departments were transferred to Raigmore and a community hospital was built in the grounds to the left of the main building, which became the headquarters of the UHI. New housing was built in the remaining grounds of the hospital. The Tweedmouth Memorial Chapel was added on the south of the main building in 1896-98. The Infirmary Bridge is a pedestrian suspension bridge built in 1881. Ness Bank Church was built in 1900-01 and originally belonged to the United Free Church which joined with the Church of Scotland in 1929.
