Scope and Content This general view shows central Inverness on both sides of the river. On the eastern side the castle sits above the Ness Bridge, which replaced the earlier suspension bridge in 1961, and Porterfield Prison is at centre left. On the west side of the river, St. Andrew's Cathedral (built 1866-69) and Eden Court Theatre (opened 1976) are at the centre of the photo with the Bught Park, which was acquired by the town in 1923, at top centre. The Highland Council Headquarters which is housed in the former Northern Counties' Collegiate School (1875-76) is at centre right and the canal at Tomnahurich can be seen at top right. Though there is a record of a castle in Inverness going back to the C12, the present building dates from the C19 and very little relates to earlier structures. It functions as the Sheriff Court. Porterfield Prison was opened in 1902 to serve the courts of the Highlands and Islands. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
