Scope and Content Ormond Castle, a medieval castle first built by William the Lion between 1200 and 1214 as a royal border fortress between the lands of Scotia and the Norse in Sutherland. Through the centuries the castle passed through a number of families. It was destroyed in the 1650s by Oliver Cromwell. The stone was used by him to build his fortress at Inverness.
