DP 341882

Description An oblique aerial view of Rosemarkie, Black Isle, looking N.

Date 17/1/2010

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 341882

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content A general view of Rosemarkie. In the lower left a retting pond and a little higher and to the right the prominent Old Manse with the associated farmsteading just below it. Within this area a bronze age cist burial was discovered. To the right playing fields are clearly visible and in the open ground just above is the find spot of a bronze age flat axe. The majority of the buildings in the upper half of the image are within the conservation area and notable sites include - Rosemarkie Parish Church of 1821 on the site of the 6th century monastic settlement which developed into the cathedral for Ross until its replacement by Fortrose Cathedral c1235. Mainly within the church and grounds, but also at several other places in the village, a large number of Pictish carved stones have been found. Some are now in the National Museums but many are housed in the Groam House Museum - the prominent building to the left of and just above the church, with its left hand end projecting into the High Street. Directly opposite the church tower and further to the left, across both High Street and Courthill Road is the old Smiddy and the remains of the moothill. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
