Scope and Content This is a close view of the Laird's House and other structures at Skelbo Castle. The original castle was a motte and bailey construction, dating to the C12. It was slighted by Bruce in the Wars of Independence and rebuilt in stone in the C14. Originally in the hands of the De Moravia family, it passed to the Sutherlands of Skelbo but was forfeited following the '15 rebellion, after which it was acquired by the Gordon Earls of Sutherland. The remains of the two storey building in the SW corner of the enclosure dates to the C17 and is classified as a Laird's House in the HER. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
