Scope and Content This is a general view of the Longman, South Kessock and Merkinch areas of Inverness, on the north side of the city. The A9 runs from the bottom of the photo, over the Kessock Bridge, linking the two sides of the Kessock narrows. The piers for the Kessock ferry can be seen at South and North Kessock and the communities of Redcastle, Charleston and North Kessock are on the north shore of the Beauly Firth. To the right of the A9 is the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, opened in 1996, the Longman landfill site, closed in 2003, and the extensive saltmarsh. Just coming into view on the left are the Cameron Barracks, built in 1880-1886. Above the Caledonian Canal are the areas of Clachnaharry and Scorguie. Other features which can be seen in this photo are the marina at the mouth of the River Ness, the nature reserve at Merkinch and the sea lock of the Caledonian Canal at Clachnaharry.
