Scope and Content This Zip file includes a dxf file (2010 version) and a set of shapefiles which contain the generalised polygons created to show the Antonine Wall rampart, ditch and upcast mound as well as the associated forts, expansions and military way on the 2007 World Heritage site nomination maps. For each component the layer indicates whether the feature is "Visible", "Line of", or "Line of - unconfirmed". The polygons were originally created to be shown on a 1:5000 map background. The polygons were created from the known extent and location of the features along the wall as correct in 2006. Each shapefile has an associated layer file to help with the depiction. Extract from the editorial notes from the map publication for which the polygons were created (FRONTIERS OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE WORLD HERITAGE SITE PROPOSED EXTENSION, The Antonine Wall, Volume II, Maps): The depiction of the Wall is based on the most recent comprehensive field study of the monument undertaken by the former Ordnance Survey archaeological branch in 1980. This has been supplemented and enhanced through information collated during more recent field survey, excavation and aerial photographic transcription by RCAHMS. A standardised depiction for the Wall has been adopted on all the maps. On the 1:25,000 and 1:5,000 maps (IV and V), the component features of the Wall (the rampart, ditch and upcast mound) have been depicted to standard overall widths based on the Ordnance Survey mapping though even at this scale it has not been possible to illustrate all the nuances in width. The widths of these features on the maps should therefore be regarded as symbolic.
