Aerial view of Stracathro Roman Camp and ring ditch cropmarks, Brechin, Angus, looking W.

SC 1970203

Description Aerial view of Stracathro Roman Camp and ring ditch cropmarks, Brechin, Angus, looking W.

Date 10/1978

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1970203

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content This image shows a cropmark record of Stracathro Roman Camp with Smiddyhill Farm showing partly in bottom right corner. Also visible is the ring ditch cropmark feature (Aberdeen Council's HER: NO66NW043) lying just outside the W gate into the camp. The ring ditch feature (Aberdeen Council's HER: NO66NW068) within the camp perimeter does not appear to show, although a thin dark line is visible running diagonally across the camp, possibly a modern service trench but also possibly the side of an early enclosure ditch. The broad soil mark, tentatively identified as a possible pipeline trench, W of the camp boundary is also visible, though this may just be variation in the subsoil. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
