Scope and Content Ormond Castle, or the Castle of Avoch, was the seat of the Ormonds, and is said to have been one of the royal castles built circa 1179 on the frontier between the emerging kingdom of Alba to the S and the Norse-land to the N. It tops a large mound on the shore of the Moray Firth and was probably destroyed by Cromwell's army circa 1650, the stone being used to help build Cromwell's new fortress in Inverness. Only the foundations survive, with outer banks and ditches. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
