Description Aerial view of township, Strath Mashie, Balgowan, Newtonmore, Badenoch & Strathspey, looking WSW.

Date 6/5/2000

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1944756

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content This small settlement in Strath Massie, to the SW of Dun da Lamh, is thought to have been abandoned before 1850 and was shown as unroofed on the 1872 OS Ist edition survey. Two buildings - one aligned WSW/ENE and one shown NNE/SSW - are seen on this photo, though only two are shown on the current and earlier OS mapping. They probably formed part of a single farmstead. A remnant rectangular enclosure lies to the E but has been largely truncated by a more large drainage trench defining an improved field but possibly also related to the adjoining forestry plantation. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
