Scope and Content Raitts souterrain, by Lynchat near Kingussie, is shown here lying in an improved field with possible remnant rig cultivation running down slope beside this feature. The remains of rectangular enclosure walls can be seen at the base of the field on its SE end. A possible circular enclosure 36 foot diameter was previously identified to the N at the top of this photograph. The souterrain is the source of early modern traditions describing it as the hideout of a local robber gang, but is of probable iron age date. It is likely to have been associated with a roundhouse or similar structure above ground though no trace of such a structure is now visible. The site was cleared by David Brewster, the then owner of Balavil Estate, as reported in Proceedings of the Society of Antiquities, volume 5 (1865). More recent trial trenching adjoining the site was carried out by Rick Barton of ORCA, as part of investigations in advance of the planned dualling of the A9. Some worked stone tools and ceramics were found in two of these trenches. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
