Scope and Content The enormous Muirtown basin was a tremendous feat of engineering, dug out by hand and completed circa 1807. It was originally planned by Telford to be a second harbour for Inverness, but the size of boats became too large for it to achieve its potential. At the right of the photo is the Muirtown Swing bridge, carrying Telford St over the Caledonian canal. In 1935 it replaced an earlier bridge shown on the Ist Edition OS. The original control cabin still stands. The large industrial building above the basin (B&Q hardware store at the time of this photograph) is built on the site of the Glen Albyn Distillery, founded in 1843 by James Sutherland, Provost of Inverness, but closed in 1983. The buildings were demolished in 1986. Behind this was the site of a US submarine depot, established in 1917. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
