Date 21/8/1999

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1944303

Scope and Content In the centre of the photo is Muirtown swing bridge, carrying Telford Street over the Caledonian canal. In 1935 it replaced an earlier bridge shown on the Ist edition OS. To the left the long industrial building (B&Q at the time of this photograph) is built on the site of the Glen Albyn Distillery, founded in 1843 by James Sutherland, Provost of Inverness but closed in 1983. The buildings were demolished in 1986. In front of the distillery is the southern end of the Muirtown basin. Behind was the site of a US submarine depot established in 1917. The canal continues to the right into the Muirtown locks. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
