Scope and Content Scottish National Buildings Record. Written on verso of the mounted print: 'Shire: Dunbartonshire. Place: Helensburgh. Building: Cairndhu Hotel. Photographer: G.N. Date: March 1965. Detail of archway in hall'. Detail of capitals on archway in hall, Cairndhu, Rhu Road Lower, Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute Cairndhu, a two-storeyed villa, was built in 1871 to designs by architect William Leiper (1839-1916), and the service wing was extended in 1902. The interior was decorated by artist Daniel Cottier (1838-91), and includes Japanese-style painted ceilings and fine stained glass panels. It was converted to a hotel in 1956, and a residential home in 1984. This shows two polished granite columns supporting an archway in the hall. The columns have capitals with sculpted female heads and floral motifs below Ionic-style volutes (scrolls). The cornice above has a dentil-patterned frieze composed of blocks in relief. The matt finish of these sculpted capitals contrasts with the shiny columns below. Just visible (right) are stained glass windows by artist Daniel Cottier. The layering of textures and enrichment of surfaces are a key feature of 19th-century design. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
