Scope and Content Fort George was constructed following the '45 rebellion to replace Inverness Castle which had been seriously damaged but by the time it was completed in 1769 its purpose had been overtaken by military developments and by the Napoleonic Wars it was doubted whether the defences could withstand a modern artillery attack. It is used at present (2020) as an army barracks, but is also a major tourist attraction with a regimental museum. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
