Description Aerial view of South of Lairg, Sutherland, looking NE.

Date 1998

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1896409

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content This is a close view of the area to the south of the village on the east side of Little Loch Shin. Lairg is a crossing point for four roads and benefits from being on the North Highland Railway Line. It also has a livestock market. It is believed to be the site of an impact crater, dating to 1.5 billion years ago. Although there are many sites of archaeological interest in the area, there are none on the archaeological record in this photograph. Just upper L of centre is a cirucular structure, also seen on later aerial photographs. There is extensive rig across the middle of the photo. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
