An oblique aerial view of enclosures 1km SE of Rhaoine, Strath Fleet, East Sutherland, looking N.

SC 1896299

Description An oblique aerial view of enclosures 1km SE of Rhaoine, Strath Fleet, East Sutherland, looking N.

Date 1998

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1896299

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content The image shows a number of enclosures, of at least two distinct types, probably associated with livestock. The irregularity of footprint suggests that they pre-date the influx of large-scale sheep farming. If there are any hut or house structures, they are not readily apparent. What appears to be an irregular head-dyke runs from the burn up the right side of the photo, continuing out of shot. This suggests that the enclosures in the image may be part of a larger township, raising the possibility that the associated habitations may be out with the area of the image. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
