The photographs record the four abbeys before subsequent restoration. At Dryburgh, the iron gate of St Medan's Chapel, installed by the Earl of Buchan, is shown still in place, the inner orders of the east door from nave to cloister have not yet been restored, and the entrance to the slype is still partially blocked and in use as a doo-cot. At Melrose the clock can be seen still mounted on the south transept gable.
