Scope and Content The village of Portknockie was founded in 1677, apparently named after the two rugged headlands beyond the Harbour, Port Hill (beside Harbour) and Green Castle (seen here above the white-roofed building). Green Castle has Bronze Age pits, and is the site of a timber-laced promontory fort dating back to the Iron Age. These exposed headlands were also used for fish-drying. There is a 20th-C pillbox/observation post at the seaward end of Port Hill. The Harbour, built in 1890, was a busy fishing port, and craft of the Zulu type were built there. At top right corner, the Bow Fiddle Rock is a natural arch of quartzite, the reason for its name being apparent when viewed in the direction of the image.
